Joint Injections

Targeted injections for knee, shoulder, hip and other joint pain, given in our St. Petersburg office when rest, stretching and other conservative care are not enough.

How Joint Injections Work at Our Clinic

A joint injection places medicine right inside or next to the joint that hurts. Our providers offer image-guided corticosteroid injections and viscosupplementation, a gel-like injection for the knee and other joints. For some patients, PRP made from your own blood is another option.

We start with an exam and a look at your history, and sometimes imaging, to make sure an injection is the right next step. If you need a surgical opinion, we refer you to a trusted orthopedic network and stay involved while you recover.

  • Exam and history review before any injection
  • Image guidance to place the needle precisely
  • Corticosteroid, gel (viscosupplementation) and PRP options
  • A follow-up plan to see how the joint responds

Who It Helps

Joint injections are often considered when pain keeps coming back even after rest, therapy or medicine.

  • Knee pain and osteoarthritis
  • Shoulder pain, including rotator cuff irritation
  • Hip pain and bursitis
  • Sports and overuse injuries
  • Active adults who want to keep moving
  • Patients not ready for surgery

Injection Options We Offer

Your provider will explain which option fits your joint and your goals.

Corticosteroid injections

A steroid medicine calms swelling inside the joint. It is a common choice for flare-ups of arthritis and bursitis. We use image guidance to place it where it is needed.

Viscosupplementation (gel injections)

A gel-like fluid is injected into the joint, most often the knee, to help cushion it. It may be an option when arthritis pain has not improved with other care.

PRP for joints and tendons

Platelet-rich plasma is made from a small sample of your own blood. It may help some knee, shoulder and tendon problems. Most insurance plans do not cover PRP, so we review the cost with you first.

Referral when you need more

If an injection is not the right answer, we tell you. When a surgical opinion makes sense, we refer you to a trusted orthopedic network and keep following your care.

Exam and plan

Your provider examines the joint, reviews your history and any imaging, and explains whether an injection makes sense.

The injection

The injection is given in our office with image guidance. Most people go home the same day and ease back into normal activity.

Follow-up

We check how the joint responds and adjust the plan, which may include therapy, another option or a referral.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do joint injections last?

It varies from person to person and by the type of injection. Some people feel relief for weeks, others for months. Your provider will talk with you about what to expect for your joint and when to follow up.

Is there an option besides cortisone?

Yes. Besides corticosteroid injections, we offer gel injections (viscosupplementation) and PRP made from your own blood. We help you compare them after we examine the joint.

Will I need imaging first?

Sometimes. Your provider reviews your history and examines the joint, and may order imaging if it helps decide on the right treatment. Our injections are image-guided for accurate placement.

Does insurance cover joint injections?

Coverage depends on your plan and the type of injection. We accept most major insurance plans, but most plans do not cover PRP. Call (727) 322-4227 and our team will help you check before your visit.

Can I talk to someone in Spanish?

Yes. Our services are available in English and Spanish, and Dr. Kathryn Syed is a bilingual family medicine physician.
