Sports Injuries

Care for sprains, strains and overuse injuries, with a clear plan to get you back to your sport safely.

What Are Sports Injuries?

Sports injuries are injuries to muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints or bones that happen during exercise or play. Some are sudden, like an ankle sprain, a pulled hamstring or a hard fall. Others build slowly from doing the same motion over and over, such as tendonitis, tennis elbow or a stress reaction in a bone.

You do not need to be on a team to get one. Weekend runners, cyclists, pickleball players and parents chasing their kids all get hurt. Getting the right diagnosis early helps you heal faster and lowers the chance of the same injury coming back. Concussions are sports injuries too, and they need careful follow-up.

Signs You May Have a Sports Injury

Some injuries are obvious right away, while overuse injuries creep up over weeks.

Pain during or after activity

Pain that gets worse each time you play is a common sign of an overuse injury.

Swelling or bruising

These often follow sprains, strains and direct hits.

Trouble bearing weight

Being unable to put weight on a leg or ankle needs to be checked.

Weakness or instability

A joint that feels loose or gives way may mean a ligament injury.

Limited motion

Stiffness or trouble moving a joint through its full range.

Headache or confusion after a hit

These can be signs of a concussion and should be evaluated before you return to play.

Common Causes and Risk Factors

Most sports injuries come from doing too much too soon or from poor preparation.

  • Skipping a warm-up
  • Increasing training too quickly
  • Weak or tight muscles
  • Repetitive motion in one sport
  • Worn-out or poorly fitted gear
  • A past injury that did not fully heal
A muscular man in a gym grimaces in pain while gripping his injured shoulder.

How We Treat Sports Injuries

Your visit starts with an exam of the injured area and a conversation about your sport, your training and your goals. We then recommend the right next move, which may be rest, therapy, an injection or imaging. For concussions, we provide evaluation, monitoring and a graduated return-to-play plan.

When healing stalls, we offer image-guided joint injections and PRP therapy, which uses a concentrate of your own platelets to support repair of joints and soft tissue. We also give honest return-to-play clearance, not too soon and not unnecessarily late. If you need a surgical opinion, we refer you to a trusted orthopedic network and stay involved through your recovery.

  • Evaluation of acute and overuse injuries
  • Concussion care and return-to-play plans
  • Image-guided joint injections
  • PRP therapy for slow-healing tendon and soft-tissue injuries

When to See a Doctor

See a provider if an injury does not improve after a few days of rest or keeps you from your normal activity. Go to the ER for a visible deformity, a suspected broken bone, or a head injury with vomiting, worsening headache or confusion.

  • You cannot bear weight or use the limb normally
  • Swelling or bruising is getting worse
  • Pain from training keeps returning
  • You had a hit to the head and feel off

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best treatment for a sports injury?

It depends on the injury. Many respond to rest, ice, gentle movement and a gradual return to activity. Stubborn injuries may need an injection, PRP, imaging or a specialist referral, which your provider will discuss after an exam.

Can urgent care help with sports injuries?

Urgent care can handle a first look, but ongoing care works best with a team that follows your recovery. Established patients at our office can often be seen the same day.

How long does PRP take to work?

Most patients return to normal activity within a day or two after PRP and notice improvement over 4 to 6 weeks as healing progresses. Many need one to three sessions.

Does insurance cover sports injury care?

We accept most major insurance plans, and coverage depends on your plan and the treatment. PRP is usually not covered by insurance, so we discuss its cost openly before treatment.

Do you see kids and teens?

We see athletes of every level, including high school and college athletes, as well as adults returning to sport. We also do pre-participation sports physicals.
