Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) in St. Petersburg, FL

Pulmonary function testing measures how well your lungs work. We do it in our office, so you can be tested without waiting for an outside appointment.

Breathing Tests in Our Office

A pulmonary function test, or PFT, shows how much air your lungs hold and how well you move air in and out. You breathe into a mouthpiece connected to a machine while a team member coaches you. The test does not use needles.

The results help your provider tell whether a cough, wheezing or shortness of breath comes from asthma, COPD or another lung problem. Because the test is done in-house, your provider can review it with you and start a plan sooner.

Who It Helps

  • Wheezing or chest tightness
  • Known asthma or COPD
  • Past or current smokers with symptoms
  • Checking how well a lung treatment is working

How We Use PFT

A breathing test is one part of a full lung care plan.

Finding a Diagnosis

When breathing symptoms do not have a clear cause, a PFT gives your provider real numbers to work from. It can show whether your airways are narrowed or your lungs hold less air than expected.

Tracking Over Time

Repeat tests show whether your lung function is stable, improving or getting worse. That helps your provider decide if your treatment needs to change.

Inhaler and Medication Review

Test results guide which inhalers and medications make sense for you. We also check that you are using them the right way.

Referral When Needed

If the results point to a problem that needs a lung specialist, we refer you and share your test results so you do not start over.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pulmonary function test?

It is a group of breathing tests that measure how much air your lungs hold and how fast you can move air in and out. It helps diagnose and track lung conditions like asthma and COPD.

Does a PFT hurt?

No. You breathe into a mouthpiece and follow simple instructions. Some people feel a little tired or lightheaded from the deep breaths, which passes quickly.

Do I have to go to a hospital or lung lab for this test?

No. We do pulmonary function testing in our own office, so there is no separate appointment at another facility.

How should I prepare for my breathing test?

Wear loose clothing and tell us about every medication you take, especially inhalers. Our team will let you know if you should hold any medicine before the test.

Is a PFT covered by insurance?

When it is ordered for symptoms or a lung condition, it is often covered. We accept most major insurance plans, and our team can verify your coverage first.
